On the eve of Simon Strong's wedding day, a young woman, Flo, armed with a double barrelled shotgun, arrives at his front door. She is there to avenge the mistreatment of her best friend, Zara. Simon begs for mercy, claiming he has no knowledge of anyone called Zara. What has happened to Zara to create such an extreme reaction from her best friend?
Kiss My Name follows the lives of several characters from childhood in the 1980s to adult life in the twenty first century. As several of them gather in Blackpool, for a Stag Do and a Hen Do, mayhem ensues. Has Simon cheated on his wife to be and will he make it to the church at all?

Last summer I read Calvin Wade's Forever is Over, and it was a book that had me preoccupied for weeks after I finished it. So far, Calvin's second book, Kiss My Name is no exception. He has a way of creating characters that are wonderfully flawed and unpredictable, and completely believable and relatable. Refreshingly, his characters have the ability to change over the course of the narrative. While some remain stubborn and, as a result, don't exhibit any discernible emotional growth, others actually change the way that they view the world -- even if that view has been held onto tightly for most of their lives. And he captivates his audience with humor and real down-to-earth issues. It is that potential for versatility, and the ability to relate to their problems, that makes Wade's characters fascinating and his stories interesting and entertaining.

Wade employs a writing device in both of the books he's written in which he reveals a little piece of the end of the plot at the opening of the novel. The way that he does this has you preoccupied with the information that you've been given throughout the entirety of the story as you gather up pieces of the big picture, but not in a distracting way. He manages to present it so that it makes you motivated to understand how the event you've already witnessed has come about, and it is interesting to try to theorize about what is really happening in the "glimpse to the end" without having any of the surrounding contextual information.

So far the setting of Calvin's novels has been the 80's to the present, and he does an amazing job of creating a sense of nostalgia for his readers, even his American readers, such as myself, who may or may not understand all of the references that show up in the narrative. However, despite that potential disconnect of culture, which is probably unavoidable, as you read you still have a great sense of the time frame and get that feeling of being transported to another time.

I highly recommend reading this book as well as Forever is Over, as Calvin is an excellent storyteller and both of his books have been great. I'll be waiting for the next one!

Kiss My Name edition by Calvin Wade Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I didn't even download the book because of the clumsy first sentence in the description "On the eve of his wedding day, a young woman, Flo, armed with a double barrelled shotgun, arrives at Simon Strong's front door. "

Huh? It should be "On the eve of Simon Strong's wedding day," etc.
Calvin Wade has a talent for creating a cast of wholly believable characters and inserting them into equally believable situations, set against a backdrop of recent historical time periods. In this case, the story of Simon and Nicky is told through their own eyes and those of their friends and relatives, from schooldays to middle age. The book is superb in highlighting the trials and tribulations of teenage love, unplanned pregnancy and the way lives are changed by the effects of a few moments of unbridled passion. Underlying the main theme of the story is Simon's own guilt over the death of Colin, his little brother, drowned in a canal, and his need to prove that one of the boys from school killed Colin. Only time and the conclusion of the book will tell. And why has strange young woman arrived on the doorstep, shotgun in hand, ready to blow Simon's nether regions to smithereens? Kiss my Name kept me enthralled from start to finish and is thoroughly deserving of a whopping five stars!
There are way too many POVs... I kept having to go back and check which person I was reading. Predictable.... And the ending was horrendous. The only reason why I finished it was because I refused to be a quitter....
Brought back memories of living in the north. Characters were realistic and superbly built. Very enjoyable. Good read and good end.
This was a book that kept me wanting to know what happened next.
As with Calvin's first book "Forever is over" it is a book that is very easy to read and very difficult to put down! With so much insight to the characters I could visualise the complete story in my head like a movie. The only complaint I would have is that it did have to come to an end! I had come to know those characters so well I didn't want to leave them behind! I hope you've started the next one Calvin.......
I wasn't sure if the author could write a second book which was as good as his first, but he certainly managed it. Enjoyable from beginning to end, the characters became very real and left you wondering what they would get up to next. Couldn't wait to get to the end to see what really happened, and wasn't disappointed at all. I would recommend this book to everyone, Calvin has a way of slotting references into the story which everyone can relate to. Looking forward to the next one...
